from what I've seen the movie takes a complete 180 degree turn from the series.
while the TV show had an A+ script, a great cast, and acting with jokes that made up for the "special effects" of a low budget TV show, the movie is a high budget film, with a failing script, a cast that can't emote for crap, and really little "substance" to the characters.
In other words, Animal House meets Star Trek.
Oh yeah with the previews of "this ain't your daddys star trek" It basically told trekkies to fuzz off!!!! cuz all it's doing is trying to attract that frat-boy audience in college.

I have to admit, I am having a hard time accepting this movie as part of Trek cannon.

My son and I enjoyed the IMAX movie at 9:30 AM at Potomac Mills Mall today. Movies before noon are $6.00, but the Same movie with IMAX costs an additional $4.00. Movies after 6:00 PM w/IMAX costs $14.50. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the fact that Kirk was a player. However, not enough lust scenes. Simon Pegg, who was hysterical in Shaun of the Dead, did a great job playing Scotty. Truly a perfect character for him. Karl Urban did extremely well as Dr. McCoy. I really did not know that Uhura had a HUGE thing for Spock and was such a babe magnet to Kirk and others. I liked seeing Spock perform and watching his replacement. Overall, the movie was outstanding and was PACKED at 9:30 this morning. There was a great script, story, scenes, acting, humor and action. I give the movie an A. If there would have been more heavy drinking and midnight babe binges, I would have given it an A+.

Not a trekkie so I'll wait until it hits the small screen. Local reviewer gave it a 3/4 stars. Based on his review I'll probably enjoy it because I'm not a trekkies. That being said I did enjoy watching the original series.

I have to agree with you and the review. I think the cast over all was well selected with the exception of Kirk as well as how Kirk was presented. I cracked up when he chastised "Fast and Furious" as being an awesome movie..LOL Urban who played McCoy I thought was awesome. I actually felt like I was watching Deforst Kelly on screen. Urban did a good job of presenting the essence of the original McCoy. In my opinion, Uhura and Kirk need to be re-tooled for the next movie. Also, their science and science babble needs to be better and get along with getting rid of the "Star Wars" effect of getting rid of the ridiculous aliens that were presented.
