As an appointed Board Member for the Disability Services Board in PWC, VA, life can be soooooooo difficult.
Here are contents of my response re relocating handicap parking spaces so that they are more convenient for the disabled:
Mr. :
When I spoke with an ADA representative, I was informed that handicap parking spaces MUST BE 'the closest available parking spaces'..in order to be ADA compliant.
Based on the overview screenshot that you provided in your email to me, it is obvious that 13 parking spaces are much closer then the spaces that VDOT is proposing for handicap parking. In fact, some of these 13 parking spaces are directly in front of the PRTC bus stops. Furthermore, I am very, very concerned that many handicap people in Prince William County have repeatedly refused to park at this PRTC commuter lot because of the long distance (100 yards) between the current handicap parking spaces and the PRTC bus stop and this has been the case for several years. Every night I witness NO MORE then four cars being parked in these handicap parking spaces because these spaces are so inconvenient for the disabled, while non-handicap people repeatedly benefit from spaces that are only six feet from the PRTC bus stop. I do not understand this rationale.
It simply DOES NOT make any sense that the current parking spaces/markings were approved based on "bus circulation patterns, degree of difficulty making changes, loss of capacity, etc."
Accordingly, I would like to see the study/determination for VDOT's decision and how it meets the ADA compliance.
