The guy was a space cadet, and when Letterman asked him if he had been hanging out with the unabomber, I thought I'd lose it. You have to see the video on that interview. The guy is a total nut case! I think he's proof that drugs can fry your brain. www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1604929/story.jhtml

Pity because he was a good actor too. He's "retired, and subsequently gone off his rocker. That beard loooks he's been scorounging for food in a side alley for a years It screams "BUM".

I just watched that online this morning - hilarious. The discussion on a blog I read raised the possibility of it being a publicity stunt...anyone think he was just acting? The sunglasses (and beard for that matter) could have been used to hide any giveaways...

Joaquin is a bad mofo, that look is tops. If I were him I would have walked off in the middle of the interview. Dave showed him little respect. That's just me. If Joaquin is taking drugas it's not something to be made fun of. That is sad.
Liked when he put that gum under his desk, that's something I woulda did.

Phoenix was there to give his movie a boost. He didn't even seem to understand why he was sitting there.
I hope he doesn't end up going down the same road as his brother.

I saw a blog post that referred to a discussion on imdb about this...someone said they were at the show live, and during commercial breaks Joaquin and Letterman were talking normally, and at the end of the show he took off the sunglasses and gave the audience a big smile. Who knows if the guy is telling the truth, but if so, it points to the whole thing probably being for publicity...

The sunglasses (and beard for that matter) could have been used to hide any giveaways... I really can't see (1) Letterman railing on somebody that harshly unless he was in on it and prepared for it. Letterman seemed way too comfortable with the whole schtick, and (2) someone who is intoxicated having the patience to sit there and take the tongue lashing that he took. No matter how low one's inhibitions may be at the time, he simply stared off the commentary. This man is a great actor and we saw another great performance. Just my opinion.
