Just a year ago, Josh Allen was being seen as one of the top QB prospects coming out in this year's NFL draft. He'd shown all the signs of being a guy who could become a great NFL QB.
There were questions about his passing accuracy, but that was something that could improve. There was only one question. He had not played against top level schools that much, and when he did, his body of work wasn't all that great. Of course, that could easily be explained by his team as well. They weren't in the same caliber as those in the top 5 conferences in the NCAA.
In one practice, prior to the Senior Bowl, Allen went from one of the top prospects at QB to a great big question mark. He went from a gold standard QB, do one that taking early would be very risky, and probably not what should be done. His accuracy, and the velocity he put on the ball, wasn't where it should be. There were other problems too, but it wasn't as visible as the two people NFL scouts were referring.
So, where does Allen fall in the draft pool? He was considered a strong possibility for the first round - where now? How much will his play in the Senior Bowl effect his draft ranking? It gave me food for thought.
"If" Allen did fall into the 4th round, would the Packers be interested in taking a flyer on him, and bring him in as a "project." Would they be willing to invest 3 to 4 years in grooming him, teaching him, and resigning him, to a long term deal, that would make him eventually be the heir to the QB position, after Rodgers?
Based on the McCarthy philosophy of the past, carrying two QBs, and trying to stash one on the practice squad, it wouldn't work. For at least one, probably two, or three years, Allen would need to be taught how to really play QB in the NFL. But the end result, in - for sake of argument - three years, could well be the next Green Bay QB to lead them for another decade. It appears there's raw talent there, it just needs to be harnessed, and used properly. It's kind of like the raw talent they saw in Rodgers, when they grabbed him in the 1st round, knowing they had Favre at QB. Insurance for the future.
Josh Allen question marks
