As of now, we are so lucky. Our home, in Weslaco, TX, is not in direct line with the heart of hurricane Harvey. We are just south of the main impact area, and since we're around 35 miles inland, they're only expecting about 12" of rain over the next three days, and winds of about 40 MPH with gusts to 55. We'll be fine with that, we hope.
It's agonizing being in Wisconsin and not being able to be there, and care for your home, to insure everything is well.

Very few basements in Texas. There are some sissy holes, but you have to be careful there to insure they don't end up covered in water so you can't get out, or drown inside. The sissy hole is good protection for tornadoes however. If I was building a home in hurricane alley, from San Antonio north to the border, I'd definitely have one. But, where we're at, the threat of water makes it best that you build on high ground, or at least have your home elevate, sometimes on stilts. What we have is a mobile home in a 55+ age restricted park. They've weathered quite a few hurricanes there, so we feel fairly confident our home will be there for at least as long as we live. But, tropical storms and hurricanes can cause some real damage in the area, including to our homes. Of course, they're tied down. If a hurricane is headed in our general direction, we'd be heading north long before it got there. Our destination, Austin. At least we know we'd be out of the worst part of it.
