On Saturday night, Rusk County Deputy Sheriff Dan Glaze approached a vehicle in a field, and was shot to death by the owner. Dan Glaze was just one of so many police officers that have been killed over the last year. In each case, as an ex police officer myself, I feel a special pain. The loss of a brother in arms. A member of the thin blue line that protects us from chaos.
Dan Glaze was a graduate of Birchwood High School, in Birchwood, WI. It's a sleepy little community of roughly 400 people. He found something he liked, and he went for it, even though it cost him his life. He's a hero in Birchwood. Some young person that gathered to honor him this week in the school will step forward and become a police officer as well. They will do so, partially because of Dan, and the stories surrounding him.
Dan is more than a brother in arms to me. It's much closer. I too am a graduate of Birchwood High School. It's where I call home.
