just read about D, green passing. May he rest in peace. He made some funny statements but was a good coach. head coach he was a little over his head I think. So Sorry to read of his passing. I am older than him and I fret reading about people I know or have some sort of connection with passing. RIP/

I remember back when Green was HC for the Vikings. His wife had ties in Northwestern Wisconsin. During the off-season, they'd visit the area, and Denny always liked stopping in this wood cabin styled coffee shop in the small town where I was raised. This was back in the 90s. I happened to be up there, visiting family myself.
I was drinking a cup of coffee when he came in and got a cup. He looked around, and all the tables were full, except the one where I was sitting. I was alone.
"May I join you?" He asked. "Absolutely! Have a seat!" I said. Then, after he sat down, I laughed and said; "I'm kind of a bigot against color."
He had a puzzled, upset, strange look on his face. Then I continued. "You're Dennis Green. Vikings coach. I'm a Packer fan. The color I'm against is purple!" He thought for a moment, and then burst out laughing so hard that everyone in the place was looking at us.
We talked for over a half hour. We parted friends. He told me he got over to Wisconsin quite often, and we should get together for coffee again. Sadly, it never happened again. He was an extremely nice person, and we talked about everything but football. I think both of us were afraid we'd be talking Vikings vs Packers if it happened.
I've heard good and bad about him over the years. I pretty much take the bad with a grain of salt. The guy I met was a darned nice guy. I'll stick with that.

I had a run in with Denny too back in the 90's. I was visiting a student of mine at the time who had a terminal illness at the children's hospital in Minneapolis. As I was visiting her, Robert Smith (former Viking running back) and Dennis Green came in to visit with her. Turns out, they both made regular visits with her and they emailed each other often. Both were very classy and personable.
