This story infuriates me. It's typical of all major schools in the SE United States. They're institutions that have had their "rituals" and racism since long before any of us were born. It may have changed some, but I know that they still bring athletes into school who aren't capable of making it in the academic world, then push them through college with non-attendance courses, and a complete lack of respect for the NCAA system.
Yet, the NCAA ignores it all because they don't want to lose revenue.
The South Carolina bit, recently in the news. Players not attending classes, phantom tests given. They slapped themselves on the wrist. Gee! How wonderful of them.
Now, this story, about what happened to Bart Starr at Alabama when he was there. This is exactly the type of history these schools speak so proudly about. Their "heritage."
Their programs should be shut down for 10 years, and then only brought back with NCAA supervised curriculum testing.
I've been in Alabama a few times. Our daughter lived there for a while. I told her to get out of that hole. Go somewhere where people are genuine.
Cadillac Williams went to the high school in the town where our daughter lived. He wasn't a student by any stretch of the imagination. Getting into college was a given because he was a great running back. It's amazing how his family suddenly came into money, and decent jobs, while he was playing football. After that, his pro earnings took up the slack, when the UA supporters turned their money elsewhere.
I wonder just how good Bart Starr would have been had this hazing not happened.
