Apparently the Milwaukee Journal writers are beginning to see McCarthy as possibly being odd man out. I can understand why. I've thought that for several years. In fact, I've thought that since the day he blew the second opportunity the Packers had for back to back Super Bowl Championships.
I've repeatedly stated that McCarthy's real strength was as an organizer, not as an X & O coach. As we've watched his top offensive assistance leaving for better jobs, we've watched the level of play decrease, because McCarthy believes in promoting within, instead of getting the best out there, for the job.
The problem is, when you promote from within, you end up with yes men who owe so much to their boss, that they don't know how to stand up, and make changes, and insist on change, when their boss has a different point of view. We may well have reached that point of stagnation now, with the Packers.
My belief is that Clements is not head coach material. He's our assistant HC, and as far as I'm concerned, one of too many cooks in the kitchen on offense, which he knows best. We now have Bennett as the OC, Clements as Asst-HC, and McCarthy, all putting time into the offense, and quite honestly, doing absolutely nothing to make it better.
On the defensive side, I think Capers finally has the players he needs (at least in his own mind), but there are major flaws in the schemes they use. As an example, the long pass in OT, that broke our back. Fitzgerald, of all people, should have never been left uncovered under any circumstances. It's arrogance believing your pass rush is so good that you can let a guy like him out there, uncovered. He's Palmer's #1 option. Did they forget that? Come on Capers! But, that said, for the most part, the defense has played well enough to keep us in games, most of the time.
From all of this, and what I've read in the Journal, I think it's time to part ways with McCarthy and take a look at someone like Mooch to replace him.
