Bart Starr said that this trip, to Green Bay, will probably be his last. I'm afraid that sets in to me a lot more to those who have known him over the years. He belongs in Lambeau Field. He was the QB that made Lambeau Field the historical site it has become. He is part of every win the Packers have had since 1957.
It brings tears to my eyes thinking about the first time I met him. Sat between him and Lombardi, and we drew up plays, and they explained to me how the Packer sweep worked. Imagine. Just hours after they won an NFL Championship, the first ever in Green Bay, and I am at their team banquet, helping them celebrate their awesome win. It's a memory I will always cherish.
Above all, this day, for Favre, might never have existed had it not been for guys like Starr. The Packers were almost history when he came into GB, and he was always the man who stepped forward and represented our storied franchise in the best possible way.
Yes. It's Favre's day. Yet, it a way, it's only happening because Bart helped to make it so.
I'll honor both on Thursday night.
