Tomorrow night is do or die for Abbs. He can prove he has a spot on the roster, by playing like a man on a mission, or he can end up being a final cut from the roster. Personally, I'd like to see him stick, because he proved, at Wisconsin, that he has hands of glue, and can handle those short in routes that most guys shy away from. He also can go up for the ball, and wins hand battles more often than not.
I wasn't surprised by the cuts the Packers made. Pretty much straight forward. This last one, this weekend, is going to leave a lot of us puzzled for some of the reasons, yet, the coaching staff will know why they were made.
I was glad to see Matt Blanchard cut. I think the guy will catch on around the league, and become an asset to some team. I like his style of play. I wish him luck. He would have ended up cut this weekend anyhow.

I'm pulling for him too. I hope he has a big game and makes the team. He just seems like he fits in the Packer organization.

I agree. The Packers need a "home town boy" in their organization.

Abbs, does have his QB on his side. Rodgers was open about telling people that he already felt Abbs should stick around. lets see what happens. Can they put Ehite on the PS? then they could keep Cobb,Adams, Montgomery,Janis, and Abbs. or keep 6 recievers and three TE's. But if they lose Quarless for a few games they may need to keep 4 TE's. going to be interesting for certain.

He had very little chance last night to make the team. Hundley has to spread the ball around. He has two favorites, and it was obvious during the game. All he did is make a case for White. He even tried to avoid throwing to Janis, for some reason. There were three plays where Janis was wide open, could walk in for a score, and he looked off him, to hit White on short crossing routes.
It's very possible Hundley doesn't have any confidence in his own longer throws, which could account for it.
We have a glut of RBs, if you ask me. Gonna cut a couple of guys who will hook up somewhere, and play. I'm a little uneasy that they might cut Kuhn and keep Ripkowski, because of money. Rip looks good, but at the same time, the savvy that Kuhn brings to the field is enormous. If you look at individual plays that make differences in games, he's often there, making a key block that most guys wouldn't make.
The TE situation. Gotta cut some. The comments last night made me want to puke. They acted like there were so many good ones on the team. Hell! I see two that are worth keeping. I'd rather keep Ripkowski, and play him out there as a TE than keep most of these guys. They can't block, and if you timed them in a 40, it would be with a calendar, not a stop watch.
I don't like the schemes on defense. We're going to be missing two key players on the defensive line when the season starts, and will have to keep a guy or two who will not play after the suspensions end. I hate this situation. The league needs to make the penalties against these guys strong enough, and give teams leeways, to make changes. We end up two down on the D-line for openers, and it's going to be warm out.
I think Hundley has improved enormously. He has shucked the run first mentality enough that he can end up being a very good NFL QB. I'm very surprised to be honest. Credit to the coaches, and Hundley, for working that hard. I wouldn't be a bit surprised that he's #2 next year, and we see the end of Tolzien on the roster.
I'm going to say it again. Our #1 & #2 picks in this draft SUCK! These guys couldn't cover Granny in a wheel chair. We have an undrafted kid who makes both of them look like candidates to be cut. In all honesty, I remember a draft just like this, with Sherman, where the #1 & #2 were both CBs, and both of then ended up being worthless, and sent packing in the end. Could this happen again? I sure don't want to see us being burned like these two were last night. They were clueless in coverage. A free agent totally outplayed them again. LaDarius Gunter is 6-2, at CB, which means he can compete against the tall WRs the Packers face within the NFCN, and with other contenders. I dunno about anyone else, but I'm tired of watching our guys ending up two inches short on making deflections on passes.
I understand the philosophy of saving the starters for the season, but how long will it take for the new receivers to mesh with Rodgers when the season starts? The Bears are going to throw a tough defense at them out of the box, and I'm not overly confident about that game being a win. With our less than adequate defense, and what appears to be a worse problem due to suspensions, and the weakened receiving corps on offense, I'm concerned.
Remember this. Regardless of what we've heard, there's a strong chance that we won't even see Cobb for the first game or two, or if we do, in a very limited role.

I got to say, i like what you just wrote. I do feel that they Keep BOTH Kuhn and Rip. they both can block and play ST;s very well, I think they will have a rb group of lacy, Starks, Neal and one more, Maybe Harris, but i think they go with Crockett.I like Gunter a lot he has the size (a bit slow) but his instincts make up for that, and last ,,,he is a player who plays Hard! He really gives every play the most he can.I hope he stays. I am not sold on Hundley yet, time will tell .But he sure has played better than anyone thought he could the last two preseason games. Although the last game was a big nothing game I agree with that, I have for years wanted to get the taller CB. TT has insisted in the 5'11" type player, but man there are taller CB's with speed that would like you said better able to handle the taller receivers now a days. I also have my concerns with Masthay, I do not know what has happened to him but this is 2 years now of him underperforming.

Last year they changed Masthay's punting technique. Apparently he needed to be .2 seconds faster. When you mess with these guys, like that, it's a major problem. They have muscle memory that balks at it happening, and often, never do make the change effectively.
The fact is, it wasn't Masthay that was the problem. It was special teams failure to get the blocks. Guys looped around guys who were too soft to the inside, and had straight bull rushes that were overwhelming our front blockers. They did not hold their blocks long enough to be effective.
Much of that problem was dictated by the fact that the Packers were trying to cover inadequacies in their ST coaching, which gave them poor coverage.
If you actually did analysis of his punting last year, I think you'd find the Packers concern was that even with great hang time, they were getting burned because of their down field coverage. They decided to slip some blocks to get guys down there sooner. That rarely works.

no, no, i watched all the preseason games, trust me he was shanking punts, he was having so much trouble trying directional punts it was embarrassing , he had at least 5 punts that he cut so short , they were to be 35 or so yards and he had a 17 yard out of bounds , i mean really He was having trouble, Now i can go along with messing on his timing, but his location was bad, the last game he looked pretty decent though only one muffed punt the rest were good. his hang time was baD THE first 3 games barely made 3.9 seconds on many

I agree. But, all of the things you described happened because he was forced to quicken his step, to get the punts away faster.
I spent years as a punter, and the muscle memory is what it's all about. Tinker with that memory, including quickening the step, or shortening it, and you have problems. Therein lies the problem that Masthay had.

I agree with you you can change it by repeating the different timing often enough, I guess the packers thought he had enough time to do so.

ALERT! how many recievers are on the roster right now? I can come up with only three and then add James Jones that is 4, we need one more don't you think? Adams (2nd season) Montgomery Janis James Jones who am i missing? Cobb just may come back for first game, but again he may miss 3 or 4 games.

IF Cobb isn't ready, the Pack goes in short handed at WR. If one goes down, the game plan gets shortened considerably. It's going to be an interesting game.
