Blanchard vs Hundley for the #3 QB spot. I think they give it to Hundley despite the fact that Blanchard may be the better QB. It's a FA vs a 5th round pick. Pertsonally, I think Blanchard has shown more, but I'm not the coach.
It's obvious, from what people are saying, that Janis is having troubles in camp. He does not seem to have that little extra that gives him a step up. I think the preseason game against the Pats will be a make or break game for him. He needs to show crisp routes, and make something special happen, when he's on the field, or he's toast.
It won't change one thing. I see Abbs being on the practice squad.

No way Blanchard make sit over Hundley. I too agree Hundley is in because he was a draft pick with the "P" word. I do not like him much at all, But I am willing to see if he can develop.the receiving griiup, i really see them keeping six(6) Nelson, Cobb,Adams, with Montgomery,Janis and White. Janis has the edge if they keep five, he can play ST's well he has great speed, and great hands. and he can end it if he plays in preseason this year like last year. But i myself would keep all six players. One reason is they may keep only Quarless and R. Rodgers. and the third if they want would be right now given to Perrilo but by no means a lock.

Janis had at least the big play in the 1st half...didn't watch the 2nd half at all yet. But he blew by a guy the Pats announcers were talking about having a great camp and someone who was playing with the first teamers some on the first drives.
White had some misses.
I thought Tolzien looked ok. Not great, but not bad. Ball had some more zip on it and showed nice touch on the short yardage play that turned into a nice gain...little TE in the flat and he floated it perfectly over the LB. Needs to work on setting up the screen pass though.\
Not really too much to take out of the first preseason game other than a few little things. Also noticed Ryan out there at LB making a nice play on one run...cutting through the OL first...then running down the line to make the tackle on the RB.

I thought Janis played well and White had some drops. To me after the game Janis has the edge. But like i was thinking, they like White and Janis speed alone may keep him one more season. plus id is good on ST's. keep 6 receivers on roster this season?done it before. Elliot looked good. Thornton did decent, maybe he woke up. I also thought J Ryan played well enough to consider he has a big upside. give him time to learn. never had much of a chance to see if he can have any good returns on punts or kicks, the Pats kicking game was solid(Montgomery) he got dinged on a pass to him . hope he is all right. concerned about the number one offense not able to get points on three drives.

Janis was adequate. White sucked. Montgomery will make it because he's a return man. I liked what I saw with Gunter as a DB. The guy only played one year of college football. He was a basketball player. He knows how to get there, and get on the ball. I think he has a shot to make it with the team. I know he'd disappear off the practice squad. Someone would grab him. He has the makings of a solid DB. I think his play is kind of like Ha Ha Clinton, only a little less refined.
I thought Hundley sucked. He couldn't even seen his outlet men on passing downs. Twice, with a lot of open field, TEs came across the middle and he totally missed seeing them. He then acted like a deer in headlights. Yet, I think he stays because of that potential they keep saying. I don't think they'll give Blanchard a chance to look better than him to be honest.
I will say that I saw a lot more from Tolzien last night than I ever have. He may have finally taken to all the coaching. It's good to see. Now, will it ranslate into playing ability during the actual season. I think we're going to find out. We will probably see Rodgers dinged up somewhere along the line. Especially if we can't get receivers open because of the routes they're taking. Watching Rodgers having 5 seconds in the pocket, and nobody getting open.... kind of spooky.
Red zone offense sucks. It has for a year now. They didn't get the wrinkles out last year, and still haven't. I think they're forcing guys into too many longer routes that give underneath coverage a chance to develop. Two guys crossing at the back of the end zone, and releasing the ball just as they make the cross is offensive suicide. That happened a couple of times last night.
I'm not impressed with Clement calling the plays. They're still the plays chosen by McCarthy at the given time. They said him being on the sidelines made it up tempo, but I wasn't impressed. Either let Clement call the game on offense, and just offer some advice, or take the chart back, and do it yourself. This half and half BS don't work.
I'm confused. Zook, our "new" ST coach was the assistant coach to the last ST coach. The last ST coach was the assistant to the guy before him, who started the stink. Since this is a third generation of stink, why in hell should I be a bit impressed by Zook being the guy? He looked dazed and confused out there, and the camera caught it real well. As far as Zook the coach, I remember how he messed up the University of Illinois football program. Why do the Packers need a guy like that? McCarthy just don't get it. New blood, not another cl
CORRECTION: ROLLINS NAME IN PLACE OF GUNTER. HE'S THE ONE, I BELIEVE, WHO HAS ONLY ONE YEAR OF FOOTBALL. BOTH LOOKED GOOD THOUGH.

Few more observations... -Liked more of what I saw from Ryan. I think he can be good...if not forced in too early. Bradford had the nice quick rush on that 4th down midway thru the 3rd quarter too. -Running game...seems there is depth there. Lacy rolled early...Starks can play...but both Neal and Harris showed good burst too. Will be interesting how the numbers there and FB happen. Oline was doing their job in run blocking. Though, Bakhtiari needs to get much better on the speed rushers.
-Agree on Rollins and Gunter. Hard to really know vs. 2nd string and how outmanned NE was at WR...but they played tough football and stuck with their guys.
-Was that Montgomery out there on the block that took out 3 guys on the Harris TD run? Kuhn had a nice block there too to set the edge.
-Not sure what the complaint was about special teams was. Gave up one big return to start the 2nd half and that was it.
-Hundley...yeah, he missed the crossing TE when he took the sack...the pressure sort of got to him before he could hit it though. Followed it up with a nice completion on 3rd and long (though, soft coverage underneath on that). Got out of pressure on the next drive and threw a bullet on the run that was real close to a completion along the sidelines to Montgomery. Followed by another nice throw to the boundry to Montgomery (tough to make that catch...but the throw was the only place it could be over the corner and under the safety). He wasn't great...but I wouldn't expect him to be in his first preseason game. Rodgers was bad for a year or two in preseason. Its a long process...and he is a project.

Gunter has the smarts and size and the instincts but he is very slow, he just can not be expected to cover well i like him but i think his lack of sped will get to him. The Rock and Roll boys being one and two round picks look like they will step up this season, I like them both very much. Yes that was Monty that hit the first defender and forced him into the other two, worked out great! No reason for three to be so close though anyway it looked great. I think they keep as i thought earlier, both FB's Hundley is just in my thoughts from what i have seen in school and so far just not the NFL QB type, he wants to run and like was mentioned he also has yet to look at ALL his reads and move within the pocket to give himself another second or two, he needs to learn that. I love Tolzein, he had no time last year to learn anything, like MM has stated he tossed the whole book at him because he did not want to slow down his offense, it was just to much for any QB to grasp. MM now stated that since hew has had a entire camp this year he has made a giant leap. I like him as a solid back-up and i think he can develop into a starter. TE i have concerns with, but all the more reason i can see Kuhn staying here along with the RIPPER . this guy is fearless on ST's and i am sure once given more reps as a FB he will be Kuhn replacement not year or two.
On the backups in the offensive line, Barclay is got to go. I am hoping the likes of Rotherman, Phillips,Taylor,Tretter, Vujnocich, and Walker can replace him. I think Tretter is in though, and that means Gerhart will be gone and like i say i hope Barclay goes and is replaced by one of the others.

Agree with you on the TE...and Hundley at this point. He is not NFL ready right now (which is not a surprise). I don't think he looked to run too quickly this game though. He never really ran, just the one rollout that got him out of the pressure.
Also agree on Barclay. He has experience...but appears to have regressed over the last 2 years.

Good points on several players by both of you. I too liked the way Ryan & Bradford showed how they belong in the NFL. Also, watched Elliot hold the line, and become a force out there, when on the field.
I think Barclay ends up cut too. Tretter is a solid guard and center. That makes it an easier decision. They don't have to be specific on position replacements.
Something I thought was a real tell as to how good the Packers offense is. They alluded to the fact that the Packers had the 4th rated offensive line in the NFL. That's amazing considering how they have built this line with mostly low draft picks, and guys who weren't considered that good. Hats off to Thompson on finding these guys and the coaches for elevating them that far.
An interesting thought crossed my mind. When players leave the Packers as high priced free agent offensive linemen, very few of them make the grade. That tells me just how intent the Packers are in developing skill sets conducive to the Packers brand of play, and not characteristically uniform to other teams.

so far in just he second time in preseason games Janis has had 4 balls tossed to him and he has caught 3 of them,,, and oh all three for tds. he beat double coverage on 2 of the three passes and the third he simply blew past the defender and went over his head for the catch. Last year he had trouble and fell behind because of his shingles. this year he has caught up and is playing well. He has blocked decently and just out plays the coverage. If he does not get to stay on the active roster, then he must be some jerk in the locker room or something. this guy can flat out play football. he is a receiver and the job is to get open and made positive yards, he has done that and he has scored on 3 of 4 passes to him and not short passes either i think 26 yards is his shortest. anyway he i think is a lock for the 5 slot. no other receiver is even close to what he has done so far.

Agreed on Janis. But, despite the catches for TDs, they look at much more. Crispness of routes, blocking, and the ability to think on the fly, and be in tune with the QB.
We see an event, but coaches look far beyond that to the total concept of a guy's play.
My opinion? Based on our limited info, I think Janis can look up the #5 slot over the next week end a half.

Yeah...after struggling for his first several years finding Oline...he has done better. Im not sure on Barclay...thought he would be cut too. But now Bahktiaria is dinged up and Barclay has been playing some there.

No doubt about it, with Bak injured, Barclay will get a great shot at proving what he has. It's a golden opportunity to either play himself onto the team, or off. Most players would do almost anything for this kind of chance, because it can showcase their abilities. It's rare that this happens, with guys that are considered sub material.

Barclay is a run first blocker, he let A. R. gets nailed many times when he played the pass. he is a gamer, but not a starter or a LT. I think he could sub well enough on the right side and let Bulaga shift to the LT spot. Lets just wish bak can come back soon! he has played poorly so far this year.

I remember the dig on Bulaga when he was drafted by the Packers, and their first thoughts after he'd been in training camp. His footwork was a little too slow to be a left tackle. I think that may be the case now as well.
But, to be honest, he has done a tremendous job on the right side, and we've watched the Packers develop a better generation of a better running offense in that direction. There was a time that going that way was almost a guaranteed loss of yards.
Still, watch closely in the game this Sunday, and see if they favor running left.
