The first time I met Lee Remmel was in 1958. I was at the only game the Packers won, 38-35, over the Eagles. There were only a little over 1,000 tickets sold for the game, and less than 800 people in attendance. It was just before Lombardi came in, and turned things around.
Lee didn't spend all his time in the press box. He liked moving around, sometimes even on the sidelines, during games.
My cousin and I were there, and our seats were the "cheap seats" near the end zone. We were sitting a long ways away from the 50 yard line, and there was nobody in any of these seats that far out in any corner of the stadium.
Lee was on the sideline. It was early in the game. He waved at us, beckoning us to come down to the rail area. We thought we did something wrong, so we went down there, wondering who he was, and why we were being called down.
He just smiled and told us; "Go sit in the empty seats in the middle of the field. It's okay. Nobody will say anything to you."
We did as he suggested, and after the game, while we were waiting outside the stadium for my parents to pick us up, Lee came by and asked us how we liked the game. Of course we told him we did. He said; " Once a Packer fan, you're stuck for life." Then he laughed. "I know,." He said. "I've been out here since I was a kid in school. I can't get enough of it."
He was right. Once a Packer fan, always a Packer fan. It's in our blood.
