Over the years, I've had thousands of friends. Strangely enough, I remember so many of them that it boggles my mind. Amongst them, a buddy for the last 53 years, who has an interesting story, that is mentioned here in this article, in relation to Gary Knafelc retiring as the PA announcer at Lambeau Field.
I'm in a unique situation here. I know the kid who handed Gary the 50 cents. I was sworn to secrecy, over 50 years ago. Gary knows the kid now, as an adult, but doesn't know that he's the one who gave him the money. It was his game money allowance, to buy food with at the game. He was so happy the Packers won, and that Gary caught the game winning TD, that he thought he'd pay him for doing it!
You have to know the kid. A great guy. A dear friend. His Grandfather was President of the Packers at one time, and his Father was their accounting attorney for over 25 years. They have been season ticket holders since the first day that they had such a thing, and the family has "never" missed a home game no matter what, in Green Bay. There was always someone there, even during the war years.
Gary isn't supposed to know who it was, so I can't say my friend's name, but I can tell you this. He opened the doors for me to meet so many people within the organization back in the 60s.
My friend is still alive, and so is Gary. If my friend should pass on before Gary, I think I'll contact Gary to let him know who it was. It will put a smile on his face, and increase the friendship they've had for years, even more.
Some things are so special you need to share them, yet not expose them at the same time. This is one of those things. Losing Fuzzy reminded me of how much we need these things in our life. We all need to make memories.
