Fuzzy Thurston. We weren't close. In fact, we only met a few times. When we did, we'd have a few drinks together, and talk football.
One night, I walked into a bar in Antigo, WI, and Fuzzy was there. we were talking football when a couple of area lumberjacks who were in the bar walked over and told Fuzzy he didn't look so tough, and neither did his friend (me).
The bartender told them to knock it off, so they went and sat down at a table, and kept mouthing. They talked about how they both played HS football, and they figured they could kick both Fuzzy and I's asses in a game. Well, the bartender had this bean bag game, and he loaned us one of the bean bags, and we played a little "football game" right there in the bar. There was a lot of bruises, bloody lips, a few broken tables and chairs, and a bill for the whole thing, in excess of $300. Since Fuzzy and I won 4 TDs to 2, the lumberjacks paid $200 of the bill, and Fuzzy and I split the other $100.
Then the 4 of us proceeded to really tear one, sitting at a table, using bar rags to wipe the blood off our lips and faces.
When I finally got home two days later, I told my wife I slipped and fell. How the hell could I ever tell her what really happened.
It's just one of those things that happens, while you're living life.
I'll miss Fuzzy. Best damned blocker I ever had in front of me, particularly on that night.

Great story TW! I love hearing about former players back in the day. Fuzzy will be missed. He will also always be remembered as a Packer legend. I was sad to hear the news today.

Love the story TW! It's hard to see your childhood "heroes" grow old and pass on.
