This "rant" is about both college and NFL coaches. Often, they don't see the talent players really have. Sometimes they over estimate the talent, more often, under rate players.I'm looking at Wisconsin Badger players in particular, since I know them best.
J.J. Watt - He had the tools to make plays every down at Wisconsin. He was held in check, by a coaching staff that saw their DE as the outside stopper, not as much as a force against the run, or the pass rush. As good as he was in college, he could have been even better. As soon as he hit the Houston Texans roster, they made him a total package. He's now the best in the NFL, bar none. He's not the only Wisconsin defensive lineman making waves. There are more.
Chris Borland - A totally awesome player at Wisconsin. Not highly sought after in the pros. I would trade Devante Adams for him in a heartbeat. Can you imagine this guy in a Packer uniform? Forget his size. He's just damned good, and it's because he sees the field, knows tendencies, and knows how to weave his way to where he wants/should be, by using smarts. With him in our lineup, we could be the best defense in the NFL. Put him next to Hawk, and watch Peppers & Matthews become even better. I was pissed when the Packers passed on him like they did. This guy is a pure player. Of course, Harbaugh didn't see it either. He had him benched until the guy ahead of him, who is an All Pro defender got hurt. Now, they can plug both in at the same time, and burn a lot of offenses. There are several Wisconsin LBs in the NFL, and they do a good job.
Wisconsin offensive linemen - These guys come out of college prepared to play. If you list the top 5 guys at each position on the interior offensive line, you encounter at least one, sometimes two, players who learned their trade at Wisconsin, and have moved up to be one of the best in the league. Credit to the Wisconsin assistant coaches that have done this job for years. Sadly, the new Wisconsin head coach, Anderson, doesn't realize that damned near every one of these boys who are that high on the list are home grown Wisconsinites, who lived on farms in rural Wisconsin.
I'd list more, but I need to get a shower, and head out for our Thanksgiving get together.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
