It seems that starting from 2004 when the peole started taking notice the artic ice has been melting 2-4 meters a year. and now they found plants that were 400 years old and frozen now exposed to the sun and they are growing. soon there will be open sea from the melt to allow ships cutting across the North, and this open space is open to all, the russians already are looking into using it to ship and to drill for oil up there. plus, look at how much closer that brings the middle and far east(china) to the main land USA, they would be able to put an army there and invade from the North.

The world is changing. The Russians & the Chinese are the two major world polluters, and they keep getting "favors" from the rest of the world.
Why do we all keep playing into their hands? Probably because we're seeing that true capitalism creates a chasm between those who are considered wealthy, and the rest of our population, which is in the 95% range of the total.
It's amazing how communistic influences on government actually creates a lack of control over environmental issues, because there's a lack of money available through the governments, to address the issues, or the lack of desire, whichever.

the EPA is the strongest environmental agency in the world and republuicans these days want to gut it. we could easily afford 100 billion a year to conserve open spaces and clean up other things. for me, the arctic should be a development free zone, like the Antarctic.

EPA can only address issues in the US, not the world. That really makes them impotent.
If we apply strict sanctions in this country, and the world doesn't in their own, we have a situation where we further the gap in production cost between American made products and foreign made, decreasing the number of jobs here.
As far as I'm concerned, until the world is brought in check through a taxation program geared to "force" environmental improvement, the EPA is doing nothing more than furthering the goal for foreign investment.

Yes, but as the worlds biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, what the EPA does have a global impact. of course the Chinese are catching up to us in polluting, and don't have agency with the chops the EPA has. you are old enough to remember what America looked like before the EPA and Clean Air acts TW, but the conditions in china are much worse. perhaps its due to instant communication and the Internet, or people are more environmentally conscious than they were 50 years ago. I agree there needs to be a worldwide conservation tax system, as well as an international transaction tax system.. 1% for transactions made, the smaller the transaction, the smaller the tax. so if a transaction is 1 dollar, the tax would be a penny, if it is 1 million, its 10 thousand dollars. you tally up the transactions over a month, and you pay your share at the end of the month, like you do the mortgage, or the water, or gas or electricity. this would cut down on the millisecond transactions, which are basically run by computer programs anyway. how does buying something, then selling it a second later help create jobs in, say, urban renewal? Well, it doesn't.

you are right, china is far worse than the north America. i guess you both got it, just the facts are that the world and the nations like USA and GB, and France and Germany are trying to do the right thing but the vast number of other countries have no laws and our very own big business are going over there making hands over fist more profit for themselves, at the expense of the world whenit comes to pollution. MONEY is doing all the talk and until we can control the make money at the very working person and buyers expense it will never change. big business just does things like pollute, lower wages, no health care etc, to make only the board and CEO the big bucks all at the expense of the rest of the population. they are to busy making hundreds of billions and trillions of profit instead of just making a reasonable profit and INVESTING THE REST BACK TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, MEANING INVENTING TECH MORE MONEY INTO THAT INSTEAD OF A BONUS FOR THE coe WHO ALREADY IS A BILLIONAIRE, THINGS LIKE THAT. ya, i laugh at the billionaire club who want to give back have of there income today. IF they would have just invested it back when they were making it into the people and planet, they would still be the rich and powerful, but the world would be cleaner and the people willing to work would not have to worry about trying to remortage a home to pay hospitals bills and the like. the balance would be fair and just.
