For the last 12 years, we have had wireless internet here at our summer home. We've paid for it by getting a phone for the summer, and adding on the high speed internet. It has cost us over $80 a month all summer, and $14 a month, all winter, to maintain it.
Since we used wireless, several neighbors asked us if we would allow them to use our signal, and we gave them the password so they could, and didn't ask for anything from them, to offset the cost.
We decided to make a switch this year, and use Cricket at home in Rockford, and see if it worked here, at the lake, as well. It does, and it's only $45 a month. Much cheaper than the past costs, and we don't seem to have any problem with the 8mb limit. We don't even end up at 80% usage.
Anyhow, two of our neighbors - whom we'd given "free" internet for 12 years - decided to install their own wireless internet systems through the phone company.
I decided to put my wireless antenna on my PC, and guess what? I get a 100 signal strength on both of them. Both are past "freeloaders" on our system.
I talked the first one, and was told; "We don't trust having anyone on our system. Sorry!" A gutsy statement considering how they leached off me for 12 years.
I went to the second one, and asked if I could hook up with theirs. "You sure can. no problem. We'll need $45 a month plus a $60 payment for the winter months to cover that cost as well. It's costly you know."
"No thanks." I said. Then I walked out the door.
This told me a lot about both of them.
Last night, the second one came to my place, and asked me if he could "borrow" my battery charger to put on his golf cart.
"Sure," I said. "You can rent it from me. $50 for initial rental, and $10 an hour after the first hour. You need to pay for 6 hours in advance."
He thought I was kidding. He asked if it was a joke.
I just looked at him and said; "No. It's how you and I do business from here on in. And by the way.... you have until noon on Saturday to get your boat trailer off my property or it will be towed to an impound area, where you can pay to get ti back."
"I don't have any place to put it!" He said.
"Okay. $100 a week rental, with a minimun of 26 weeks in advance. You see, I don't trust anyone."
Then I shut the door.
