It was the Till case, and seeing the picture of the young man's body at his funeral that made me realize how much I hated racism and racists. I was embarrassed for the entire white race, and their acceptance of what happened.
I was 14 years old when it happened, and it has had a strong effect on my entire life.
To me, those who did this should have been given the same treatment. There can be no quarter to those who would do something as bad as they did, to this boy.
And, by the way, according to real records, he did not "whistle" at a white woman, he opened a door for her at a general store, and said, "Good morning Ma'am!"
Down there, at that time, no black was ever allowed to utter one word to a white woman.
