AS an example,, i have a 1898 dictionary(it must weigh 50 pounds! a Bible that is also huge and i think published at about 1900. I have a sterling silver tray, a wrist watch made by citizen in 1968. with alarm. If anyone has any ideas for me i could use the help. thanks

First of all, I wouldn't suggest getting evaluations by antique dealers. There are too few that are honest. They low-ball prices with the intent of trying to buy the items from you, cheaply.
We have a ring, from my Grandmother. Beautiful ring. I've kept it in a safety deposit box for over 30 years. We decided we should have it appraised, so we brought it to a jewelry store, where they cleaned it, and did a resetting for us, and gave us an appraisal at $1,700.
That didn't make sense to me, especially since I knew my Grandfather had paid a lot more than that for it, over 100 years ago.
I took it to a diamond merchant, who looked at the setting - loved the ring itself, but then told me that the two diamond cuts were unique, and the work of a man who was considered an artist. The two stones alone, as individuals, were worth over $5,000 each, and the combination of the two, in the setting, and ring, were so unique, that the whole thing was worth over $50,000. He then told me that we should insure the ring for $100,000, because that was the retail value, if we should try to replace it. He gave us the papers to prove his evaluation.
I made a copy of the new evaluation, and went to the jewelry store where I had it appraised earlier. The guy just laughed, and said; "You can't blame a guy for trying." I wanted to punch him in the nose, but told him that I was going to tell everyone I knew that they were dishonest. He didn't care.
I'd start looking around the internet for collectors groups that can give you insights on value. You can take pics and post them.

TW,, you are a calss person! thanks for the information, i agree that there are far too many pros, that run stores like the antique dealers to pay as little for something they and only they would know because it is there expertise. that is why people go to places like that, but they are going to take you for a ride if they can. Lawyers are the same, they go to school, get the expertise and then because people go to them for help, they over charge you because you just do not know. we all cannot know everything , to bad, I always help anyone who i can if i know something that does them a service or helps . I have tried looking at web sites, but they are tough for me to find many things, Like the wrist watch, i have a serial number, but ever site i go to the watch numbers are close but not any match, or very limited. I am going to try and find the show on TV called the Antique Roadshow, they seem like they want to give you a real evaluation of what you bring, thanks for your help TW.

Antiques Roadshow is on public television. You can check your local TV listings for the public TV station, and take it from there, for viewing. You can go to the link that follows, and on the upper portion of the screen, you will see categories. You can use that to find some info, or at least give you info that will drive you in the right direction for getting what you need. I'm glad I can help. www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/Added: I forgot to mention. We love the show, and watch it regularly. If we can't watch it when it's originally on, we DVR it.

TW, thanks for mentioning the Roadshow. I watched it ever since that time. I have learned some ways to put out my items. I have sold about thousands bucks so far. I was surprised that a couple items that I thought would bring me money did not, but all in all I am doing all right. still takes time. my 1949 yankee championship cloth flag is worth about 100 bucks ,but I am holding out for a collector who may need this to fill out his stuff and get more than that. thanks again TW

There's nothing more rewarding in life than knowing that what you've said, or done, has helped someone else find an answer they needed. I'm glad you're finding these results.

still have the New York Yankee 1949 pennant flag faded on one side other than that good condition. Beauty and the beast I found one person that would pay up to 15 thousand!
