About three hours ago, they took our neighbor to the hospital in an ambulance. They thought she was dead, but when they got her in the ambulance, they found a faint pulse. The problem was, it wasn't enough, and she passed away in the hospital.
She leaves behind two children that are young. One, barely a teenager, and the other so ill that it's a miracle he lived to be 7 years old, like he is. He has no control over the muscles in his body, and just lays in one place, and has to be moved around, by caregivers. Sadly enough the only real caregivers he had were his mother, who passed tonight, and his sister, who is about 13. The Father is nowhere to be found, and would be of no help the way it sounds.
Why did she die? I don't know at this point, but I do know she's been battling addiction to prescription medications for a long time. She has overdosed on at least two occasions that I know of, and there have probably been more times that it happened.
The callous belief is that she caused the problem by her drug usage, but I'm not going that route, because I don't honestly know what I would do, or anyone else would do, if they faced the same hardships day after day, that she faced.
Adding to her woes, about two months ago, she was told that she was developing the same muscle problem as her son, and would eventually end up being disabled just like him. I don't know what toll that would have taken on her mind either.
I just know that tonight, when I lay my head down on my pillow, I'm going to feel fortunate for what I have, and the health we have in our family, and I'm going to pray very hard for her and her children. Those children no longer will have any life at all.
About the boy. He may be 7 years old, but he does high school level math, is as smart as they come, and actually goes to school, and has made the honor roll, despite taking classes that are usually for 8th graders. To think, he should be dead already, according to medical science. Now he's losing everything he had, which was so little to start with.
I wish there was something we could do, but we can't. I just hope someone is out there who can help them. It's time for God to send someone to them in their time of need.
