...what caused it?
A blogger on the internet said the affair happened because of the Patreaus's wife's hairdo.

For every man of power, there's a seductive woman out there who will use her wiles to seduce him, just to show him she can rule his little head, thereby making his big head do what she wants.
Usually the woman's appearance is much "nicer" than that of his wife, who spent endless hours, days, months, and years, doing the mundane work of raising kids, helping him in his time of needs, and aging with him, due to the stress.
Letting any bimbo take you off course is stupid! He was stupid, so was Allen.

private is private, if you can do your job and not be effected by the umoral act of having another woman while your married so be it.
But i always said, if you want more than wo,man in your bed then do not take a vow with one woman, and if tempted, think , and if you must free yourself from the married life and pursue the other. that is your choice.just do not let it affect your work and try not to ruin another( present wife/husband) life by doing something that you took a vow for with the first to uphold. jmho
