Puerto Rico Joining as the 51st State?

among the laser focus on the elections Tuesday, Puerto Rico also had a vote on its status. in a two part vote, a majority voted to change its status, and 61%voted for statehood on the second part. while referendum was nonbinding, the yes vote will likely result in a bill adding Pr into the Union going before Congress. a simply majority in both houses is needed. Adding Puerto Rico will add another star to the flag, 5 more Representatives in the house (raising it to 440) and 2 more in the Senate raising it to 102. the majority needed in both chambers will rise, from 218 to 221, and from 50 to 52 in the senate. politically Pr is likely to send 7 more Dems to congress, which will simply increase the margin in the senate, and narrow it slightly in the House. adding Pr adds over 3500 miles to area to the union, from 3794085 to 3797 600. pr has about 4 milion people, so thats 4 million more tax payers, paying into Ss, and the federal coffers. PR has waited the longest between being added to the US and becoming a full state, Alaska took 92 years (1867-1959) , Hawaii took 59 years (1900-59). Puerto Rico was gained as part of the Spanish American war, so its been 114 years, 95 years since puerto ricans were given citizenship in 1917. there are several states that call themselves cmmonwealths, like virginia,
so Puerto Rico calling itself "the commonwealth of PuertoRico" would simply add one more member to that list.Me, myself, I am fully in favor of admitting them.

Republicans don't want Puerto Rico in the Union. That would add Democratic Senators and members of the House.

Even worse, they'd be minorities.

they have had all the rights of an American for a long time, they might as well become the 51 st state and make them pay taxes to the main Government. As far as Minorities,, i am to old to see it, but in just a few years, ,like around 2025 they predict that the latino will be the majority, and the Caucasion will be in the minority.

Yup! Caucasians are going to become the minority, so it's time they make peace with the rest of the population in the US.

Having been raised in a pure "white bread society," I learned in the military to accept others, and as a cop, to ba a friend of others, regardless of race, because our lives depend on each other, in both of these occupations.

I've done all I can, with my own children, to erase what was a racial gap between the stereotypical BS that was there, when they were growing up. It's one of the main reasons I required all our kids to take every year of Spanish available to them in school. I wanted them to be able to communicate with others, and be able to say they were truly racially blind.

TW's short point, caucasion is a dying culture. Make sure to write journals about your life as a white person so that the brown people can look back into history and study our culture.

I've always considered how short sighted we are as white people. I think back to the real era of Egyptians, which is often swept under the rug. It's probably true that Cleopatra herself was black. Then I think about the Jews of the past, and realize that a lot of what they say about them indicates they too were black.

If true, that Jews were black, or at least many of them, and we may be looking at our Christian faiths descended from a black man, named Jesus.

I don't want to die, and have a black Jesus meet me at the gates, and say; "Sorry! No whites allowed!" It's a message that bigoted people better think about carefully, while living their lives. It might be exactly what happens to us when we fail to recognize the equality of God's children.

I don't think the Egyptians or early Jews' were black. They definitely weren't white, but I do not think they were black.

With that said, brown eyed people are far more intelligent than blue eyed folks.

well sun tanned., I speak Spanish and my young daughter is taking the language in high school now. I never liked or disliked anyone for being a certain anything, A person is a jerk if he is a jerk, we are a good person if we are good and moral. Meaning for me, i never judge a person by there cover. although if your countries langauge is English in This Country then all should speak it and not have to make so many changes for a Citizen because they do not understand the countries language. nothing wrong(better even) knowing more than one, but it makes the cost of running a country and cost of multi langauge on products expensive as to one reason why you should know one , also if your here and say a medical peron going to an accident, and the person speaks Spanish only, and your hurt and cannot tell them what is hurting you, how would you feel?

I came to a conclusion long ago that differing points of view are essential to us growing as a nation, and people.
