The nice thing about having TW on the board is that he is older, wiser and more experienced. Because of that, he must see through the BS faster than us young whipper snappers.
On this board, I play a heavy, right wing supporter. Many times, what I post doesn't necessarily reflect my personal views, but I think it is very important to understand the oppositions views in order to affirm your own. Plus, I love stirring the pot. ;D
Also, I have said many times that I do not believe politicians will act in the best interest of this nation and that politics is merely a game of chess of one party against the next looking for that "gotcha" moment of gamemanship.
But I have to admit, I am getting quite tired of the ignorance and narrow mindedness that is flowing out of the right; the fringes are mean and militant.
For the last 4.5 years, I've been having coffee with the Maintenance Supervisor at work. He is a Pastor Haggee type Republican with the same spiritual views as Pastor Haggee.
He' a good guy IMO, but severely misled by Pastor Haggee and the militant elk of the right.
Right away when I arrived to work it was, "This country is going to pay for re-electing Obama. They chose destruction and I'm going to sit back, watch and chuckle."
This offended me. Though I am no big Obama supporter, I've never bought into the rhetoric of the left that Obama's a socialist, born in Kenya or wants to make this country a third world nation to atone for his father etc.
With that said, I merely stated, "Well, I am more of an optimist and I can't forsee sitting in a house laughing and chuckling while it burns down around you. Get out and do what you can to make it work."
"Oh yeah, what are you gonna do?", he said.
"Republicans pregnant dog about government taking over more and more of their lives, but they won't leave their homes to go and take care of the community they live in. Unemployment has been high in this country, but you haven't seen a major uptick in volunteerism over the last four years. People are merely sitting at home griping while people are suffering. No wonder government is filling the vacuum being vacated by Christians."
He didn't like that response and then moved to say this country needs a revolution because lazy people re-elected a President that supports abortion and the country is now beyond saving. I tried to say he started to sound like Jonah fromt he bible because he seemed angry that God wasn't punishing this country the way he liked, but then it moved, "I've never read the bible", which to me was inflammatory.
Long story short, I told him I rejected the idea that God would use me as an instrument of death to enforce his will on others which brought in the book of Revelations. He believes the book to be literal. I told him I didn't believe it to be literal and that it was a coded letter to early Christians during Roman occupation.
Yes, of course, I believe that good will triumph over evil, but I don't believe a 7 headed dragon will appear or the appearance of the four horseman of the apocolypse riding. Revelations is apocolyptic literature IMO.
At that, he grabbed his coffee cup and said, "I can't stay here and listen to this. IF you don't believe the book of Revelations is true, this conversation is over," and got up to walk away.
Reminding myself of 4.5 years of drinking coffee, I said, "Certainly we can agree to disagree," at which point he said, "If you don't believe the book of Revelations to be true, you may as well have the mark of the beast imprinted upon your forhead."
Really? This is how Christians act? They want to take up armed conflict and start killing those that do not act the way THEY think they should act. Oh btw, I did say that what he advocates is no different than the ideaology of Islamofascist. He didn't disagree which made my blood run cold. Scary.
The preaching of hate and division begets hate and division and it trickles down from those who preach it to those who suck it up, and their are a lot of ignorants out there who cannot critically think for themselves.
IMO, the bible is a book of love, not book of how to piss off your neighbors by being a narrow minded jack-ass.
