Afghanistan -
Eight Taliban attacked a US Army post with a mortar. They missed! As the result of their trying, a missle was deployed killing six of them instantly, destroying the mortar. Two Taliban were able to leave the area. One didn't seem to be injured, but the other one was probably wounded bad enough that he's already dead.
I think I mentioned in another thread that two days earlier an Afghan soldier arrived at a US Army COP with a gunshot wound to his leg. The Medic (my Son) who treated the wound, and sewed him up, noticed powder burns on the inside of his leg.
He asked the soldier (through an interpreter) how he was shot, and he reiterated the Taliban story. My son knew better.
The guy was carrying his weapon with the safety off, and it discharged, shooting himself in the leg.
That would have been a hard one to explain to your superior officers.
Such it is over the days in Afghanistan.
We have three more boxes going out to him, tomorrow.

Afghanistan is still a very, very dangerous place.
My prayers go to your son and the brave men and women who are doing their best under very, very difficult and trying conditions.

Dangerous is an understatement. It's a hell-hole, and we will probably never win the ideological battle. Karzai is nothing more than the "Mayor of Kabuhl!" That will probably not change, before we leave.
The only thing that would work there is a strong-arm government that showed no mercy to anyone that opposed it, and anyone even associated with the Taliban executed.
When Taliban are caught, and put in their prisons, they stay for a period of time, then are broken out, and back at it again. They pretty much work with impunity from their government, because people don't trust in the protection of the government for good reason.
There's a reason nobody has been able to change them.
