I had a pretty darned good 4th of July. It could have been better, if all our kids were with us.
The day started with a Skype call with our son in Afghanistan. He's doing well, and he's handling it all very well. His promotion comes through on Saturday, which incidentally is the same day he takes on new duties as the NCOIC of a unit of Combat Medics, at one of the most active COPs in Afghanistan. We're proud of him, but worry for him at the same time. But on the 4th, we enjoyed a conversation over an hour long. It was great!
Then, at about 2:30 PM, I got a call from the office here at Blackhawk, saying they had a child at the store who was looking for his family. I immediately changed into security gear, and rushed down there to help find the child's family.
When I got there, I saw the little boy, and as I started to talk to him, realized it was my Grandson, who I hadn't seen it over a year.
Needless to say, it was very emotional for me. I brought him up to our place, and played the same surprise on my wife, asking her if she'd help me find his family. It was emotional again. Then we went to see my Son, his wife, and their other three children, who rented a cabin where we're at.
It turned into a fantastic afternoon, and evening. The only thing missing was our son being home from Afghanistan, and our Daughter unable to come up from Alabama.
That would have made it perfect. But, I'm not going to complain. I'm a lucky man.
