At 1:00 PM on April 11, 2012, I will be meeting with several people to discuss re-locating several disabled parking spaces from their current location to the 'closest accessible' parking spaces to the PRTC (local bus company) designated bus stop. Currently, disabled parking spaces are located TWO-HUNDRED-AND-FIFTY feet from the bus stop, whereas, non-disabled parking spaces are located only FIFTY feet from the bus stop. There are several safety concerns associated with my request and NO improvements have been made during the past TWENTY-TWO years, since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. Soooooooooo I say unto all of you, ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY.

I got most of what I was hoping for. I will get SIX new disabled parking spaces in the parking lot located directly in front of the PRTC bus stop and VDOT is more then willing to add additional parking spaces as needed. When the entire parking lot is restriped, VDOT will consider my request to move the disabled parking spaces even closer. BTW, it costs $20,000.00 just to install a concrete ramp and I asked that IF disabled parking is going to be moved to the agreed area, sidewalks be installed, so that the disabled would not have to navigate through traffic to the bus stop.

Don't forget the disability parking spots in front of liquor stores and bars.

Sometimes we don't see the whole picture on an issue. A good example is exactly this. Handicapped parking by a liquor store or bar.
Being disabled doesn't mean a person has no right to have a beer, or go into a bar, or buy a 12-pack for home.
Prime example? Veterans who have been disabled due to war wounds. Should they "hide under a rock," and not live in society because it makes society "uncomfortable" by them being around?
Since the VFW has bars, they should be closed? If a restaurant serves alcohol, the disabled should be allowed to enter?
Nowhere within the contract of personal rights to life does it say, "No disabled allowed," on the doors to establishments.
It shouldn't. It's just as bad as saying; "No blacks allowed." Discrimination, through and through.
And yes.... there should be disabled parking by taverns and liquor stores, just like any other establishment that caters to the public. No exceptions based on personal likes and dislikes.
Glad you brought that up PC. It's amazing how people have a tendency to see things with blinders on. Treating the disabled as second class isn't acceptable, at any level.

I will 'gimpy' on over and drink to that. Please excuse me for my Three Stooges sense of humor, but the Three Stooges movie is finally out and well...
