Subject: Support The Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012 Hi, Total outstanding student loan debt in America is expected to exceed $1 TRILLION this year. Millions of hardworking, taxpaying, educated Americans are being crushed under the weight of the educational debts, while the economy continues to sputter. Support a REAL Economic Stimulus and Jobs Plan. Support The Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012 That's why I signed a petition to Rep. John Kline (MN-2), The United States House of Representatives, and 2 others. Will you sign this petition? Click here: signon.org/sign/want-a-real-economicThanks!

"Since 1980, average tuition for a 4-year college education has increased an astounding 827%.
Since 1999, average student loan debt has increased by a shameful 511%.
In 2010, total outstanding student loan debt exceeded total outstanding credit card debt in America for the first time ever.
In 2012, total outstanding student loan debt is expected to exceed $1 Trillion.
In short, student loan debt has become the latest financial crisis in America and, if we do absolutely nothing, the entire economy will eventually come crashing down again, just as it did when the housing bubble popped. Reasonable minds can disagree as to the solutions, they cannot, however, disagree on the existence of this ever-growing crisis, as well as the unsustainable course we're on towards financial oblivion.
As a result of more than 30 years of treating higher education as an individual commodity, rather than a public good and an investment in our collective future, those buried under the weight of their student loan debt are not buying homes or cars, not starting businesses or families, and they're not investing, inventing, innovating or otherwise engaged in any of the economically stimulative activities that we need all Americans to be engaged in if we're ever to dig ourselves out of the giant hole created by the greed of those at the very top.

I am for this IF it applies to people who actually went to school. I know a lot of young people who registered for school, applied for a student loan & as soon as they got their $5,000 - $10,000, quit school & defaulted on their loans. Of course, now they are having their tax refunds snatched or wages garnished but it took several years for the government to catch up to them. This scheme seems to be very popular these days.

Good call Fran...I have to believe that you will have to prove in some way shape or form that you did attend school in order to get this....not sure.
This is gathering steam as I got an email on this because I signed the petition and they said they got 205,000 signatures in 1 day for this.
People are tired of the fat cats getting all the breaks in this country....time to help the more deserving

Agreed. Those that used their loans for school, do need help. As for those that took the money, and didn't go to school, don't deserve help. They made their own choices.

I totally disagree with this.
I have Student Loans and I will being paying them for for quite some time. I put my name on the dotted line and I am financially responsbile to pay for my own education.
TW, BB, Frannie are in no way responsible for my debt and I think it sends the wrong message regarading accountability in this day and age.
If people wish to have their Student Loans forgiven, join the Peace Corp, Military, Americorp etc to do so and have the laws changed to support service of country in exchange for debt forgivness; just don't let them walk away from it.
For the people Frannie mentioned, they should have to pay double.

I think that the majority of Republicans and the wealthiest 1% should pay for my education, as well as any costs re my going to bars so that I may better handle the current economic nightmare created by Bush and Republicans.

I think the whole system flopped when they did not include higher education for free. but then the greedy colleges and CEO;s would not be getting filthy rich on the backs of the SPORTS programs instead of teaching the youth trades and skills to make this a great Country.

I've taken several student loans through the years and I feel like nobody should pay it back except for me. If you agree to pay for it, you should! I knew back in the early 1990's that even if anyone files bancruptcy, they will not get out of paying for their student loans.
