The trend is the new memory foam mattresses. But, beware, they aren't for everyone. I'm one of those who can't sleep on one. Take a look at several versions. The alternative is a pillow top. We have one of those, but it includes the memory foam type pillowing as part of it. A good mattress doesn't have to cost $2,000 like ours did. If you go with a decent box spring, and a good mattress, it should run less than $1,000. Don't get roped in by "sleep numbers," and all of that stuff. Most of it is garbage. We have friends who have tried several types, including those, and have chucked them all out, and went to the memory foam type. What you need to check out - for yourself and whomever else will be sleeping on the mattress - is whether you get too hot while sleeping on it. Based on your statement in another thread, about sleeping with a window open, you sound like me. You generate a lot of body heat. I can't sleep on the foam because I sweat, even with windows open in the winter. I can't make it more than two or three hours, and roll constantly to stay cool. Check them out carefully before you buy. Don't let the sales gimmicks get you. Also... get a 90 return agreement in writing, in case you hate it after you get it. You want to return it and get all your money back. But, be prepared to have one in-house, ready to go, to replace it. You don't want to get caught without a mattress. Ask me about that last one. I did that, like a dumbass!

ALL mattress's are comfy as heck in the store....just remember that one.
We have a pillow top and I could very easily do without it. Eventually that starts breaking down and its like you don't have it anymore.
Also, the bigger / thicker the mattress, the more your bedding will cost. Deep pocket sheets and so on

We went through buying a new bed a little over a year ago. All I know is...it's a losing battle from the start. You've got most manufacturers making "no-flip" mattresses, saying it doesn't matter any more if you flip them. Then you've got other manufacturers saying "why would you buy half a mattress? We're the only ones who still make two-sided mattresses." They both say they're the best, and since there's really no way to tell how they're made inside or how well that will hold up, we (the consumers are pretty much screwed.
In the end, we bought a cheap $500 one, put a decent mattress pad on top of it, and have been happy so far. Be prepared for typical slimy sales tactics, that's the only certainty you've got.

ALL of my beds are full size beds, and I will be looking for a Queen size bed and mattress and a 40+ inch HDTV & stand for the Master BR.
My GF does not care what bed we sleep in, but I want our place to be 'special' and to be OUR mattress and bed. Besides, my mattress is 15+ years old.
