You suggested I overestimated my knowledge of football. I answered that statement, straight forward.
I wanted Sherman gone. He was not capable of coaching, let alone be coach and GM. When they chose McCarthy, I was happy, because I saw someone whose roots came from the WCO, which was in my opinion the most versatile offense available, and we did have a QB who could run it, with Favre.
As for Favre, there were times I felt that Sherman blew it. He refused to put Favre into a position where he would respond by being more accurate in his approach to the game. He was a gunslinger, who was too careless with the football at times. Especially in crucial situations.
Was I upset about Favre? Not really. I felt he walked away. But, at the same time, I thought they should let him come back. Mixed emotions on this one. In fact, my wife and I went to the Shareholders meeting in GB that year, and I had a chance to talk to both Murphy and Thompson. They were frustrated, and had gotten nowhere in dealing with Favre. Favre offered no guarantees on anything, but wanted to control the situation "totally."
I talked to fans, scribes, and was even interviewed on TV about the whole thing, and quite honestly, I felt it was a real mess that wasn't going to end well for anyone, unless Rodgers showed he was the real deal early on, in his first year. Fortunately, that's what happened, and now Thompson and McCarthy look like geniuses for it, and it was a great move.
Yes, I thought McCarthy would be a great head coach. I thought he'd be even better than Holmgren. At first, he showed that acumen, but then he didn't expand from that first burst of growth. He became stagnant, but that seems to be acceptable for some people. To me, you keep moving ahead, getting better, or you become stale, and old hat. That's what he's become. An old hat.
Now, I'm going to tell you something that a lot of people mind find blasphemy. Vince Lombardi had run his course as the Head Coach of the Packers, and GM. During his last year, as GM only, he struggled in getting a decent draft, and turned the team over to a man (Bengtson) who was incapable of producing a winning team. Had he stayed on as HC, and GM, he would have probably been let go by the middle of the 70s. His time, in GB, was over. You can't go on forever in this field, and be successful. You push for your success, then step aside, and start anew, somewhere else. It's how it is, and always will be.

No. He died after one year with the Redskins. He'd given them instant respectability, and guys who were out of the game (Sam Huff), came back, and played for him. Lombardi was that well respected. In those days, there wasn't a system of judging talent like the combine. The Packers were a member of Blesto, which was a conglomerate of teams having judges visit, and test players. From their info, the teams selected players. Blesto was good, and bad. For the Packers, not so good, because a lot of the things that Lombardi felt essential weren't evaluated. Now... on McCarthy.... this article, citing McCarthy's statement, the Packers were the best team in the NFL this past season. I said that already, and essentially he's admitting to the fact that they weren't coached well enough to win the championship. I guess his own admission can be "twisted" now to make it sound like I wasn't right, but in reality, I was. They weren't coached to their level of ability. I'm willing to give McCarthy one more chance. If they have anything nearly like they should in the coming year, there should be a Lombardi Trophy added in GB. If they don't get there, it would take a lot of injuries to convince me it wasn't poor coaching! www.packers.com/news-and-events/article-1/%E2%80%98I-thought-we-were-the-best-team-in-football%E2%80%99/c84bfc80-c393-440e-b250-8774f6e67893?campaign=email_150220&j=71616025&e=el_lobo_81@hotmail.com&l=23024981_HTML&u=626322993&mid=96970&jb=0

I think the Pack lost to many good coaches and MM tried to cover by doing it all, he now sees the light, he can't and he needs to find new good coaches to let him do his job. so far, I think they are going in the right direction.
